The Challenge: An "Uncoverable" Tattoo

Jeff came to us with a heavily saturated arm tattoo. It was a large black and gray piece that many believed couldn’t be covered. The sun-faced tribal design featured bold lines, deep shading, and a sprawling composition. Most artists would have passed — or even suggested laser removal. However, Peter Bogdanov saw something different: an opportunity to create something epic.

The Solution: Skull Gambler & Vegas Dreams

Peter began with a calculated strategy. He designed a skull-headed gambler character in a dark gray suit and top hat. This central figure was dramatic enough to mask the density of the original tattoo. The color palette played to the strengths of cover-up techniques. The design featured rich grays, smoky blacks, and strategic applications of color.

To further enhance the look, Peter added globes of light in a dark, smoky sky. This not only created a stunning visual effect but also helped break up the visual density of the original ink. He utilized a combination of opaque gray ink and translucent tones, layering them with precision.

As the tattoo evolved, what began as a clever cover-up turned into a full sleeve tribute to vintage Las Vegas. The design showcased glowing neon signage, casino iconography, fire-lit aces, and the classic stylings of the Vegas strip. Every inch of Jeff’s arm tells part of the story: risk, glamour, grit, and glory.

Technical Triumphs: Cover-Up Wizardry

Pulling this off required advanced techniques, including:

• Multiple Layers: Instead of one heavy pass, Peter layered opaque grays and skin-safe whites over several sessions. This slow process gradually “erased” the old tattoo.

• Color Over Gray: Peter used modern tattoo pigments. He applied bright neon effects on top of healed grays, a technique that required surgical precision and artistic mastery.

• Lighting Effects: The “globe lights” in the background were not merely artistic; they served a functional purpose, helping the new design camouflage remnants of the old.

  
  

The complexity of tattooing vintage neon must also be highlighted. Achieving that glow effect means layering dozens of colors. Each color subtly shifts to simulate light, shadow, and reflected hues. This needs to be done without overwhelming the skin or losing edge definition. Few artists even attempt it.
